SS-31 selectively binds to cardiolipin, a unique phospholipid found almost exclusively in the inner mitochondrial membrane. With age, cardiolipin undergoes oxidation and remodelling, disrupting the cristae structure required for ATP synthase supercomplex formation. SS-31 protects cardiolipin from oxidative damage and restores membrane architecture.

By stabilising cardiolipin, SS-31 maintains the structural integrity of ATP synthase supercomplexes (respirasomes). These supercomplexes are critical for efficient electron channelling through the electron transport chain — their disruption is a primary cause of the bioenergetic decline in aging mitochondria.
Mitochondrial ROS Reduction
